Fredensborg Houses will open the Utzon Museum Fredensborg on 1 September 2021 with support from Realdania.
Jørn Utzon’s courtyard houses have long been a magnet for architecture enthusiasts. With support from Realdania, the Fredensborg Houses are now opening a small museum in the central building for all the houses, where volunteer residents show visitors around and give lectures.
The Utzon Museum Fredensborg will be open one day a week. Over the years, the fame of the buildings has attracted visits from architects, engineers, building designers and students from Denmark and abroad. In 2017 alone, approximately 2,000 visits were recorded for guided tours and events.
The purpose of the museum is to spread knowledge about the architect Jørn Utzon, his philosophy and his entire body of work and architecture to a wider audience. What makes the Utzon Museum Fredensborg unique is that the actual object is the building itself and the appearance and spirit of the place.
“The Fredensborg Houses are one of Jørn Utzon’s finest residential buildings and, for over 60 years, have also provided a setting for a community of senior citizens that has been ahead of its time in many ways. We are delighted to be able to preserve an architectural masterpiece while also promoting important Danish building culture,” says Henrik Lund, project manager at Realdania.
