How should the elderly live in the future?
According to Associate Professor Michael Asgaard Andersen, we should not only look forwards – we should also look back. In a new article on Altinget, a Danish online newspaper, he highlights the collective houses of the 1950s and 60s as a source of inspiration for modern senior living communities and how they can solve the challenges of housing for the elderly.
These houses combined community with privacy and practical support in everyday life. It is precisely this balance that many new senior living communities lack today, because they are often based on the idea that residents should be able to do most things themselves – all the way.
We see this as an important reminder: good senior housing takes into account both active lifestyles and the needs that come with age, and therefore the key to future solutions may lie in the experiences of the past.
